PostSubject: Sportbike Scene (what happened to it?)   July 29th 2010, 9:46 am

Hey Guys and Gals,

Curious what your input on a topic that Rob (turbo1k) and I have been discussing a bit lately. What happened to the sportbike scene in Billings? Rob was recounting to me events from some years back where they would literally line the entire parking lot of Albertsons with sportbikes on a Friday night and average draws were more than a dozen bikes out. I know a few of you own bikes but I don't see you out on Fridays with them. Any thoughts on why?

I'm not sure if sportbike riders just span the various car genres and thus when they are riding their bikes they don't all come together or what else it might be. Maybe all the bike guys finally upgraded to a cool car and just cruise those instead. I'm not sure, that being the case, why we didn't get a new infusion of "new bikes" though. From what I understand from the dealerships, they still sell a ton of bikes and I still see then and hear them all the times during the days.

I'd love to see more bikes out on cruise nights and I'm trying to think of ways to promote that.

Did insurance go through the roof, cops crack down on bikes, parents stop allowing them at a younger age, or what other ideas do you have? Figured it might be fun discussion though.

Yeah back a few years ago the bike scene was crazy. I don't see them out like I have seen in the past. I sold my bike two years ago cause of the insurance. I'mplanning on owning one again. Hoping for next summer. But ill be buying one out right.

I think many people are afraid of them, myself being one of them. It's a big turn off to me when I read in the news that another biker has been killed. The shitty part about it is that many people don't look out for them. It's harder to see someone on a bike in your bind spot.

Honestly, I would have one by now, but I can't justify having fun in order to risk my life at a very young age. Momma wouldn't be happy lol

I think the accidents have scared some people away. Sure, a lot of it is the fault of the driver of the car who doesn't see or look for the guy on the bike.

But on the flip side how many times have we seen kids driving down the street on a sport bike, no helmet, popping wheelies, etc. and generally acting like they have a death wish. These people also give the rest of the lot a bad reputation.

PostSubject: Re: Sportbike Scene (what happened to it?)   July 29th 2010, 1:58 pm

I used to ride for a long time, and about killed myself attempting to be cool and pulling a harder wheelie than I should have. Spent a month recovering, and will never be as strong again. I still miss riding, but watched a guy in the heights last year die in front of me on one and it about made me sick. I love riding and riding hard, but when I wrecked my son was very upset I didn't get to spend a month of summer doing the things a dad should do. I ended up getting into cars more and more simply due to the factor of safety and having a cage around me, as well as still being able to take my family in the cars. The bike was very single purpose, and an expensive toy to have 3 months out of they year....not to mention I couldn't take the family anywhere, which also started to become selfish feeling as well. Motorcycles are a lot of fun and freedom, and I hate to sound cliche, but the older I get the more I enjoy being safe while having fun, fact is there is only so much gear you can wear, and being on a bike is a much greater chance of getting hurt than in a car. I was big in the scene years ago, but a lot of the guys I used to ride with either got hurt, died, or hung it up before either of those options hit them. If I could afford to have a bike and not worry about funds, I probably would still have one honestly, but it is hard to prioritize with lifes other responsibilities and needs, with time and money.

Good points eekenterprises.

Another thing I was thinking about.

The last couple years in a row the city has pretty much destroyed 24th street. Who wants to cruise that mess? I know I don't. Dirty, bumpy, lots of traffic because lanes are closed off, etc.. No thanks. Since that was the main road people liked to cruise on and it's been tore up like that I have to wonder if it has something to do with people just not wanting to bother driving it like they used to.

My main reason for not being out riding on a friday night is I am always out of town. Otherwise I would love to meet up with a few guys and go riding at least once a week. Two buddies of mine have cruisers and we go riding whenever we can in the evenings

Some people make good points. Bike are very fun. Wish I still had mine. Also on the other hand kinda glad I don't so is my wife. When the wife and I were on the bike I was always very safe. But as soon as I was on my own it was game on. I wasn't much of a stunt person just more into top speed runs. Id really like to build a quad with a bike motor Very Happy

After my brother laid one down about 3 years ago at 80mph and almost died and Brandon's accident last year the last thing you'll ever see me do is get on a bike...

Besides, being in cars that are faster than them is even more fun Smile

Turbo 1K, do you ride the boosted 'busa (or whatever it may be) at the track?

And those cars are few and far between around here, for now. If some of us would ever finish projects around here, it'll be fun to see what wil hang with what kind of bikes.

edit: And Jesse, you should really be wearing a helmet when you guys are riding around. Both you and your wife, ask my brother what would have happened had he not been wearing one...

Yeah, there is definitely a chance of getting hurt on a bike, I'm of the mind set that you have to give them more respect than they are usually given, even then, other dumb drivers abound and like to keep us on our toes. Then again, everything has risks, I know a few people that have been seriously hurt in car accidents. Only way to live risk free is to put yourself in a bubble. A good friend of mine once said, "when it's my time, it's my time, nothing can change that". He said that after I quetioned his riding at highway speed on his VMAX with no helmet, in shorts, t-shirt and flipflops. He died of a heart attack digging his work vehicle out of the snow. Risk in everything...

Well, my wife and I are doing our part, we just added a new steed to the stable. We traded her '06 Ninja 650 for an '05 GSXR-1000. If I get ambitious I'll go take some pics.
