How To Choose Your Clutch Empty
PostSubject: How To Choose Your Clutch   How To Choose Your Clutch Icon_minitimeNovember 2nd 2010, 1:37 am

Some information i came across thought it might be helpful for people confused and or stuck on what kind of clutch to get
There are 3 main materials clutches are made of they have their advantages and disadvantages. They are; organic (mainly asbestos, yes they say they dont contain it anymore but they most definitely do), carbon/kevlar compounds and for heavy use....ceramic.

Organic: They are found in pretty much every car from stock. They are very forgiving as they do allow some slippage before locking onto they flywheel. They consist of a full faced disc has small cypes for clutch dust to evacuate from between the face of the clutch and flywheel. These clutches allow for alot smoother release because they allow some slippage and are quite durable and long lasting because of their full face. because they dont bite extrememly hard tey can also be used with softer metals like aluminum as a flywheel. ideal clutch for a daily driver. wont get you that fast time at the track or take much torque.

Carbon Kevlar: most cases they are almost identical to an organic clutch being that they are full faced. instead of asbestos (which is that same stuff used on ur brake pads) it features as the name says carbon and kevlar. these clutches bite a fair bit harder than an organic clutch and need a bit of abuse to keep the clutch from glazing over (stop and go traffic, riding the clutch etc.) over all its a good clutch for a weekend warrior or autocrosser... aluminum flywheels dont work very well with a C/K clutch as they are too soft and just form hot spots which cause warping of they flywheel so a chrome-moly or similar hard metal is recommended.

Ceramic: Ceramic clutches are for heavy abuse. They are not designed like the previous clutches i mentioned. They feature a "puck" design, rather than a full face i kinda just like to call them fingers tho haha. ceramic clutches grab extremely hard, and the flywheel does pay the price for this. Driving with a ceramic clutch is much like having your clutch pedal substituted for a on/off switch. They also tend to "chatter". these are the clutches you are looking for in high power apps.
Clutches come in lots of different configurations. sprung, unsprung and twin disc are a few i will cover.

Sprung clutches have a number of springs located around the shaft hole in the clutch. these springs job is to dampen excessive vibration from your engine to your transmission.

Unsprung clutches simply dont have the springs to reduce vibrations. a hard core race car wont have a sprung clutch because the springs have a little excessive "give" as it makes contact with the flywheel.

Twin disc: Probably one of the best ideas ever haha. they feature 2 clutches and 1 flywheel. they go on in this order. clutch cover(or pressureplate)/clutch disc one, flywheel (which is anchored to the pressure plate)/clutch disc 2. the concept is pretty simple, more surface area to transfer the engine power to the trans its a win/win situation.

Note when buying a clutch dont go off of hp#'s as limitations rather torque #'s. HP is " the amount of work you get done in "X" amount of time" where as torque is the twisting force applied to an object.

I am not sure 2 flywheels would be a good idea in my book. Getting them synchronized to transfer the power at the same time could be tricky.

Being that I have a twin disk I will tell you they are a pain in the ass for daily driving. Just go with a Kevlar mix if you are going to be driving on a daily basis. I kill my car on startup almost every time I drive it at lights and stop signs. Very embarrassing.

I had an act six puck unsprung on my boosted four door, sweet in hard pulls. Shit for DD. If I had a boosted car again I would go sprung. If not just an aggresive full disc.
