| What do you guys run? I've been using Mobil 1 5w-40 TDT oil in all my vehicles, but I've heard good things about Kendall and the German Castrol if you can find it. | |

| Almost all oils now days are the same base oils, but with different additives. It really comes down to what you want out of the oil. If you are building a track only car there are some very good oils for that, even some oxygenated oils to help you get the most power. But for street driving almost all the oils are the same plus a few small additives that won't really matter to 99% of the users.
I've used Torco race oil, Castrol race oil, Mobil 1 and never had any issues with any of them. I always monitored temps and pressure. I have also tested the viscosity of each of those in our lab. They all perform very similar. Dealing with Oil everyday at work I can tell you that if you stick with a well known name you will never see a problem caused by the oil itself. If you neglect the service schedule obviously you run the risks but the oil itself when used in the appropriate heat ranges and intervals should all do pretty much the same thing. Oil system problems not caused by the oil itself are obviously very dependent on the motor and its oiling system.
The biggest issues with oil are people not understanding the weight ranges and running too thick of oil. Running oil that is too thin will not cause major damage, if you think about it a thinner oil until overheated can easily get in all the small crevices and keep everything lubricated. But oil that is too thick can not until it is heated. This is why cold start ups cause the most wear on many engines. And why reving a cold engine is a very bad idea. People always think because they have a higher hp motor they need a heavier weight oil, which is not correct. Choosing the weight oil should be determined by the clearances on things like the main/rod bearings. A loose engine can handle thicker oil, however does not always mean thicker oil is needed. If higher rpm's and heat are planned for a loose engine than the thicker oils may be a great choice. Stockish setups, even those with an aftermarket turbo system or larger turbo still should be fine with the OEM recommended oil weight. I personally always ran 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer in the 240. I had a pretty loose engine setup and after 4 year when we tore into the motor everything still looked great, and that was with a larger turbo and 3 times the factory Hp.

| Agreed on the 10w30 synthetic oil for turbo applications..... I was reading up on the topic of oil to run for turbo apps and all it leads to top name brands such as....... Castrol Edge, Castrol Syntec, Rotella T, Mobile 1, Valvoline Syntec, and other leading brands it seem most all oils suggested for turbo apps are synthetics or synthetic blends! | |

| O'Reilly's has a sale on 5 quarts of Castrol Synthetic and a Mobile 1 filter for $30. I couldn't find any German Castrol, but I did find that they make a 5w-50. If it sucks, it's only $30 and I'll just change it sooner. | |

| I have been using Amsoil in everything I own for years. I get oil analyses and have run the oil on my wife's LX470 to 11,000 miles with no sign of it breaking down. | |

| Been researching synthetic oil for my KTM. Motorex makes a 20w60 that is recommended by KTM. Mobil 1 also makes a bunch of good bike oil. While poking around, I stumbled across this Mobil 1 0w-50 Synthetic. It's a racing oil, but I don't think it's for bikes. Who wouldn't kill to run that in their beast? And it's relatively cheap, too. | |

| I am using Blackstone for analysis. The Toyota 4.7L with Amsoil 5W-40 European car formula is good for 12,000 mile oil change intervals (I used Amsoil filter also).
Luke how does your STI look? Mine is showing Copper and Silver wear. They say the copper is normally seen with these engines, but the silver they do not usually see and to "watch it." I am thinking of trying a different oil (Amsoil 10W-40 currently). The oil is holding up fine, but the metals have to be coming from somewhere.
