Street Tire VS Drag Radial Empty
PostSubject: Street Tire VS Drag Radial   Street Tire VS Drag Radial Icon_minitimeMay 18th 2011, 2:00 pm

I recently switched to drag radials and just wanted to show the difference between them on my 0-100 video. I also told few friends I would post the videos. I apologize about the quality of the videos, I used a camera phone. Keeping the camera steady wasn't a option in my car I was shifting, steering and trying to video at the same time. The sound isn't that great either but it's enough to got the point across. I was always spinning with my street tires and desperately needed some grip. So after trying a few ultra high performance tires I ended up buying a pair of Bf Goodrich Drag Radials. The first video is the the street tires. Though fun and impressive to watch it wasn't to good when matched up against a AWD turbo car from a standing start. The tires spun till about 60mph then the car being in the wrong gear at that speed it had to work a little to get back into the power band. The second was a drag radial run with the tires warmed up at 18 psi and no tire spin. I think the most interesting is the 0-60 improvement. I tried to get a time with stopwatch but is someone that has a good way to time it let me know. Well enjoy!!

Not to sound rude, but are you suprised that the drag radials peformed better? I thought that was pretty well understood by car enthusiest, or is this simply for fun.

I don't think it's rude. I made it for fun and just wanted to show a comparison of the two.

Cool comparison! Thanks for sharing. I need to make the switch to DR's too, but like the look of my stock tire and dont want to start tearing things up...

I am running the stock gearing that the car came with 2.73. All I did to the rear end was freshen up all the seals, bearings and from my 4x4 days thew in a Detroit Tru Track. I drive a ton of highway miles and didn't want to get lower gearing. It does pretty well without the shorter gearing anyway. First gear goes by in a instant and hit the rev limiter. I was used to getting the car moving in 1st gear and switching to 2nd gear right away like in the first street tires video. Second gear shift would be a full throttle shift and let the tires fry (lol fun!!) till about 50-60mph then a regular shifting after that. After I switched to the drag radials I have to shift differently. As you can tell in the drag radial video I never got close to getting to my rev limiter. I am still working on a technique that the car likes I know it has a lot more in it. I love the drag radials and I would recommend them to anyone that is lacking in traction. Anything other than AWD cars, you guys already have enough traction, you don't need anymore!! Jokes I love any car that you put time and money into.

Yea I know what you mean. I found out I have a tiny bit of clutch slip and had to change both u joints. They really put a lot of stress on your driveline. I am already planning on getting a stronger clutch and its gonna have to be stronger that the 03-04 cobra clutch I am using now. The size I am using are 275-40/17 it is the same size as the street tires I was using before. So they look like regular tires I your looking from the side and not the rear of the car. It's a dead giveaway because of the tread pattern and how wide they look.

What kind of power are you running to the wheels? I can't see in your info what you have other than the 302 stroker.

After the KB went on my car the goodyear f1 were a mess in 1st with the car starting to want to go sideways at the top of 2nd. I recently dropped the rear of the lower control arms down into the lowest setting on my relocation brackets. This helps to plant the axle harder and push it up into the chassis. On street tires 2nd gear is no longer spinning for me. I haven't tried 1st yet since the change. To put things into perspective, the car should dyno around 420-430whp at sea level.

Can't wait to try out a set of drag radials but sadly they aren't cheap. Sad

EDIT: I see you have a blower my bad work blocks the videos.

My stock tires are a 35/295/18 P-zero. They have a distinctive red lettering and I do one concourse car show every year where it could be counted against you.

I love to put a set of 315's, or 335 steam rollers on the back! They look bad ass!

When the car was first built, it was going to be made for autocross. I has very stiff springs I think they are 480 front and 420 rear and that's it. Other than that the suspension is all stock except for new bushings. I never had traction in 1st and 2nd. If the road had a good surface I could really hook up. The drag radials make a world of difference so go buy a pair you'll love them. So now I will have to upgrade my suspension for drag racing. I can give a short list of the engine mods I have. First it is a 5.0 modular stroker bottom end fully forged w/custom pistons. I bought some PI heads off ebay and had them very mild ported and stock camshaft. The compression ratio is 10.58 to 1 and wanted it that way for the low end response and the ability to make it act like a N/A in the low end with a lot of timing and retarding it at higher RPM. The supercharger is a V1-S from Vortech and I am using the largest pulley I have, the 3.60 which is making about 5 PSI. I have 3.60, 3.33, 3.12 and 2.87 pulleys from slowly upgrading my other engine. I am using the concept of a centrifugal superchargers make the most boost with the least amount of IAT's so I can have quite a bit more timing on this setup than if I had a turbo or a roots setup. I am limited from using a smaller pulley because the 30lb/hr are having problems with keeping up with the setup I have now. The fuel is controlled by a Vortech FMU, T-REX fuel pump and all steel braided lines. I have been tuning with a Anderson PMS and a innovate LM-2 datalogger package. I have plans on upping the boost and I have a intercooler and meth injection, after I find some 42lb or possibly 60lb injectors, I need to do more research about what I need. Now I never had it on a dyno with this setup and have tuned it without one. I learned engine tuning from my mustang friends in Denver and from my schooling working on diffferent aircraft including turbines in Airframe and Powerplant with a Avionics add on/short course from Redstone Collage.

I have no idea it's just been run on the street a few times. I would be happy now with anywhere in the twelves or low 13's. I have done very well against some "12 second"cars but you never know I might only do 14 second passes all day lol.

What is that what he said? He was the one that won! No just kidding I don't really know. We started at about 30mph and I started sliding around till I shifted into 3rd. Didn't see him till the next stop night. I remember shifting into forth and he could have been 2-3 car lengths or so? I kept going till the end of forth (my version of a double tap but with a car). You have his # I never asked for it from him. But he has mine and I was gonna get a helmet from him for this Sunday. We will have to ask him about the race. I would like to have a chance at your Z06. I will PM you my #. I will be there on Saturday night and in Action on Sunday. Thanks Buddy!

Yea that would be fun! I hope the weather holds. I I've been waiting for the test and tune for a while now. I want to have a friendly rematch with a few cars that walked me when the road conditions (wet/raining) weren't that good (for fun, nothing serious). The drag strip is a good even playing field for high HP RWD and FWD cars. I am curious what your running too. I don't know who's 05 or newer year mustang I raced, But it did had a KB supercharger on it and I walked him really from a dig till all the till 70-80 then I ran out of room in my lane. We didn't have much room to go faster and he didn't want a rematch. Red mustang track pack 427 wing w/black stripes chrome rims really super nice??
