| Are there any sbc experts around? I'm shopping for engines for my 83 trans am and 73 datsun 260x, and am wondering what is a good route to go. An LS1 would of course be the dream, aluminum or not, but are tough to find since everyone wants them. Wouldn't mind a heavier truck engine if its cheaper/easier to find.
Speaking of Datsun Z cars, aren't there a few folks around who have done an SBC conveersion? I don't wanna make a dragster, so less power would be fine if it means less weight. A V6 would also be interesting, esp if it means more room in engine bay for turbos.
Thoughts? | |

| do you want to completely rebuild an engine or do you just want to pull it and put it in the other car ? | |

| u seriously cant do much better than a good ole 4 bolt chevy 350. there is soo much you can do with these engines the options are endless. and fairly cheap to get ur hands on too. but this all just my opinion lol it litterally takes nothing to pull 500 horse out of this engine | |

| I don't know much about rebuilding. Did it once on the 289 in my '68 Mustang with little help. It ran okay but not great, and took me forever. I'd prefer to get something fairly turn-key, and would prefer fuel-injection, even if it's a TBI.
Josh Whitcomb once told me i should just find a wrecked Suburban or pickup with the 6.0 liter, cause they have over 300hp stock and are easiest to find.
I actually do have a bunch of 350 parts lying around: a whole engine that supposedly ran, and a disassembled engine out of some drag car. I could try and rebuild one again, but for the amount of money I'd put into parts, I'd rather just find a whole one that already runs.
A few months ago on Craigslist there was a late 90s Camaro or Firebird with the 6speed stick and LS1 that apparently had a slight engine knock, and the kid was selling it for $1200. Damn thing sold within 2 hours. That sure would have made a great parts car...
I suppose I can find or build an old 4bolt 350 to put in the Datsun, and then once I come across an aluminum LS1, it'll drop right in to the same mounts and trans.
However, I just found that one of my favorite JDM engine suppliers has a complete Mazda 13b twin turbo engine, trans, wiring harness, ECU, etc that I can get for $2000 shipped. Now THAT would be crazy fun... once I figured out how to mount the thing. Probably just ditch the stock K-member completely and make a custom one. | |

| the sbc WAS a great engine. i am pretty die hard ls. i wouldn't worry about looking for just a ls1 or a lq4 as josh was pointing you too. a 5.3l will exceed your wants, and they ave very inexpensive cy. i can guide you through almost all of the ls stuff. as far as i know Shawn and myself are about the only 2 that have real experience with these babys. the factory wire harness are very easy to convert to any swap also. pm me or give me a ring and i can expound more to you. | |

| if you got small block chevy parts made for the strip bolt those on !! no point in having high performance parts lying around when you could use them .... know what im sayin? and if you want you can go to any junk yard and pic an engine some of them even have those newer 6.3l chevy engines. but if you have those parts i would go with tht path | |

| I personally wouldn't look for a 6.2 liter. reason being is they are super hard to get and your gonna pay for it. the 6.0 are great but in the last year they have got really pricey. a few years back you could pick up a 6.0 for around 700-900 but those days are gone. dietz auto salvage off bench in the height's has a 6L but they want some coin for it. $1700 with 90k miles. like chris said i'd go with a 5.3 liter they are pretty stout for the price. heck even the 4.8s aren't bad. theres a guy on performancetrucks.net that has a stock bottom end the runs 10.8s | |

| Yeah, that 5.3 is sound promising, especially if I can find one of the newer ones with an aluminum block. | |

| dont waste the time looking for a aluminum one Cy. It isnt worth the hassle. i have came across 1 (thats it) that has came through hansers. plus they are going to want double the $$$ for half the strength. | |

| True. Best luck would be probably finding a parts car on craigslist or auction. If I wanna go lightweight I suppose I should go Japenese. | |
