| So last week my EJ22 swapped GL wagon started running really poorly. Had almost no power, was shaking violently, felt like it was missing on at least one cylinder. It still drove so I continued on, but later it started making this high pitch squealing noise. Definitely sounded like metal, and possibly rotational cause it was fairly continuous. So I had my dad drag me home, haven't had time to mess with it til now. Won't start at all at this point, doesn't seem to want to fire. The two drivers' side spark plugs look fine, but the passenger side ones are pretty black. Plugs and wires are only a year old and look fine, and the coil is definitely dishing out spark. Seems to be getting fuel. Thought it might be a head gasket, but I'm not seeing any oil in coolant or vice versa. Oil was last changed about a month ago. I did a leakdown test, and the front passenger cyl was at like 60%, the back pass was at like 40%, but the drivers side ones were also at like 50%. I might have not done it right, cause it's hard to see TDC on the drivers' side cylinders. I tried doing just a compression test but my shitty Harbor Break tester wouldn't get very tight and just said 30psi for each cylinder. When it did run but was misfiring, it seemed louder than usual, and I got some occasional backfiring, so I was originally thinking exhaust valves. Engine only has about 160k miles. Seems odd that both passenger side cylinders are completely black. Maybe the passenger side timing gear skipped a tooth? Timing belt and gears look fine. The engine is out of a '93 Legacy so it's OBD-I. I'll try and dig the ECU out of the dash so I can pull some codes. Tempted to just find a used engine or a wrecked Legacy or order up a JDM EJ22 for $800 cause I don't have the time to dick around with this. Anyone have any brilliant ideas, or perhaps an engine? | |

| Does it have a cap and rotor? Or some other sort of set up? | |

| I think I'm remembering some other sort of set-up on ej22s... I had a similar thing happen to my dad's crx... the problem was the rotor pin had come loose. I bought a new rotor and all was well. Good luck dude. | |

| Nah, no dizzy, it's got a cam position sensor. Could be that. I think it has two, though, one on each cam. I'm thinking either that or maybe the timing gear skipped a tooth or stripped the key on the camshaft. Needa pull the radiator so I can look at the marks on the timing gears, cause it's too close to the rad to see otherwise. | |

| Definitely take a peek at cam pos. sensor and crank sensor, had a cam sensor bolt fall out once on an EJ25 and it sounded god-awful, ran terrible and smoked black from rich fuel. Its possible for the sensor to come into contact with the cam gear if its loose, causing an awful metallic sound. | |

| The sensors looked okay. I pulled the radiator to get a good look at the timing gears, and they look off! The driver's side is probably a couple teeth ahead clockwise of the passenger side. From the diagrams I've seen, they should both point the same direction. Ill try to get some pics.
Can anyone confirm the marks on the pulleys should be clocked the same? | |

| Nevermind, I've got a parallel thread on USMB and they helped me out. Looks like the geared idler by my water pump started to spew bearings, so the passenger side cam gear skipped a couple teeth. Explains why it seemed like a bent exhaust valve. I'm just glad it's a non-interference engine! Ordering up a new timing belt kit, seals and a waterpump while I'm at it, should be up and running soon. Luckily these engines are easy to do belts on. | |

| Lol possibly. Still needs the suspension fixed. I have a parts car with the needed part, just haven't felt like crawling around in the mud to get at it. | |

| Lookin for an EJ22 SOHC center timing cover if anyone might have a spare. Damn junkyards are never open. | |
