| so lately I've been wanting to make a Valve Spring compressor for my 4G63 motor cuz one really fit these heads. Well, I was talking to Rachel's dad about me needing it and he said bring your head in when you get a chance so I walked out my car and got it, lol. long story short he helped me used a hammer and deep socket and helped me get all my valves out. Then he really started getting interested when he saw all the carbon and burnt oil on the valves and asked me if I had my pistons in my car too and I grabbed them and showed them to him too. He saw this engine had bad oil seal rings and that was probably one of the causes of the engine committing suicide. He is a big Harley enthusiast from way back and still rebuilds them (correctly). He also really helped me decide for sure whether to get the old cams reground (if needed) or just buy newly built ones and yes I will be buying new ones by HKS . and tomorrow He's gonna help me completely strip my block and can help me get it cleaned and ready for paint and rebuild. to you guys with an engine rebuild apparently you want to completely layer the engine in degreaser, then bring it to a Do-It-Yourself car wash and spray the living crap out of it with their high pressure degreaser, dri it out and paint it | |

| If you are looking to clean it most machine shops will hot tank it for cheap. You'll also need to hone it which will probably add too much clearance and require oversized pistons. If you paint it make sure its a lite color so you can find leaks easily. Personally I would just clean it and leave it as is. No need for the paint in my opinion. | |

| I think for now I'm going to worry about the head first before I buy anything with the block and yeah I was already thinking of going to oversized pistons but not by much just .020 or .040 over as little oversizing as possible | |

this is a incorrect statement. You can hone an engine and still have proper clearance. You would really have to hone the shit out of them to make them fit incorrectly. If worse comes to worse, and your really have to hone the hell out of it (which really doesn't happen unless it had a ton of water sitting in it); you can always have the pistons knuerlized. If it does need bored because of excess wear, (assuming it is a aluminum block) it would not be a ad idea to find out how thick the cylinder liners are. don't want to have it bored and have a sleeve crack down the road. they need to have at least .080 thickness on either sides. If it needs a simple hone, i can help you out there. Ask shawnss i have a very locking hone to do the job. i DO NOT recommend a ball hone, those are for breaking a glaze, not for honing.

| just got reminded by my brother about Engines Etc. on HWY 312 $20 per cylinder for boring woot so I'll have to check with them about boring to maybe a little bigger now that I know it's really affordable and at a reputable place too | |

Sorry I left the bore part out of my post, I meant to say Bore and hone. Guess being Mr. Mom while the wife is out of town I should go to bed at night instead of posting the wrong info. I was under the impression from other discussions this was an old block that had some decent wear on it and would require a bore as well. That would be a wild hone ha ha. If you do end up getting it bored at some point I would look around for someone with a Torque plate for your engine to help avoid any distortions after the block is bored.

| torque plate honing is a good idea, but make sure they do it correctly and have the main caps torqued in also. or it does no good at the bottom of the cylinder. most machine shops get lazy and don't. i remember my dad putting together circle track engines. he would torque down every thing even the water pump when he would align hone and torque plate and engine. | |

| well it does need to be bored not sure if .020 or .040 cylinder 4 has some scoring but I know where to get a good top end torque plate and I'll tell the tech to make sure they put a bottom end torque plate on it as well so update block and head are completely void of any moving parts now yippee | |

| they dont put a torque plate on the bottom, they put the main caps on and torque them to specs. | |

| my main cap is one whole piece and I'm gonna call Engines Etc. Monday and ask what they'll charge me for a cleaning and boring for a 4 cylinder block and head. My brother's rough guess is around $150-$200 total cuz $20/cylinder and he thinks it's around $75 for cleaning. plus they can check my rods for free to see that they are still good, I'm gonna sell them. so gonna call them on Monday to get a quote and seeing as they aren't 5 miles from where my engine is stored It'll be really easy transport I'll post on moday what they quote me for the cleaning | |
