| ok gotta ask- I really hate putting a front plate on- and i've experienced many cops on these roads that haven't said anything. Is there a fine for not "sportin" the front plates? Also what's up with all these personalized plates! Is it cheap in Montana? I know in Texas it's expensive as hell | |

| It's like $30 for a personalized plate here, and you don't need a front plate in town (some cops may pull you over if you don't have one just to check other things) but highway patrolmen are a little more iffy about it. I have been pulled over for no front plate 3 times, but have never gotten a ticket, or even a warning. The most one said was, you know, you should really put it on there, that's why we give you two... So...take that as you will. If you are gonna carry a block of cocaine, I'd say put a front plate on just in case | |

| I used to get pulled over for this weekly years ago. I printed out the law to show the police that I didn't need one in town, its was only required on the Highway or interstate because it was a federal law. However if I recall correctly last year Montana past a new law saying they were required on all public roads. They were supposed to be getting rid of front plates all together because it would save a fortune for the Government and in a time when they need it that seems like a good place to get it from. But for some reason Montana decided to go the other direction and require them. I never got pulled over for it in the 240, but before the wing I don't think it stood out much, if you have a flashy car your probably screwed. I used to love handing them the copy of the law showing I knew what I was talking about, although some cops were mean after that trying to find any other reason to ticket me. | |

| But really though, in all seriousness, I'd say don't worry about it. If you are getting a ticket for it then odds are you did something else worse in the first place, like 120 on main street or running a red light then being a douche. | |

| I also have the license plate law in my car. Got pulled over in Roundup 3 years ago and I have had it in there ever since. I am not sure about the present day, but I know it used to be required for Highway only. | |

| I cannot afford to get pulled over!! Getting pulled over for not having a plate is more annoying to me than having to look at the plate on the front bumper IMO so for that sake, I have one. I even got a spiffy bracket and chrome-plated bolts to hold it on just to make me feel better about having it on there | |

What doesn't make since to me about it being on highway only, is that the only way they are going to know is if you pass them or come up on them. And how do they know you're not from out of state where front plates aren't required. Seems kinda hard to justify being on highway only.

| B1R just chased a few of them down after they crashed into some lady on 24th a few mins ago. He caught them and kept them there till the police showed up 20 mins later. Probably because they were out ticketing someone for no front license plate instead of catching people who were actually causing someone else harm! | |

| I think you would get in trouble if you cut up a plate, probably more than just not having a plate. I'm sure it would fall under some sort of "no tampering with federal property" type of law | |

| Here is the City Code and a Link to it: http://data.opi.mt.gov/bills/mca/61/3/61-3-301.htm - City Code wrote:
- 61-3-301. Registration -- license plate required -- display. (1) (a) Except as provided in 61-4-120, 61-4-129, and subsection (1)(b) of this section, a person may not operate a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, or travel trailer upon the public highways of Montana unless the motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, or travel trailer is properly registered and has the proper license plates conspicuously displayed on the motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, or travel trailer.A license plate must be securely fastened to prevent it from swinging and may not be obstructed from plain view.
(b) A motorcycle, quadricycle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, or travel trailer must have a single license plate displayed on the rear of the vehicle. A custom vehicle or street rod registered under 61-3-320(1)(b) or (1)(c)(iii) may display a single license plate firmly attached to the rear exterior of the custom vehicle or street rod. All other motor vehicles must have one license plate displayed on the front and one license plate displayed on the rear of the motor vehicle. We've been hassled about having a smoke plate cover on the back. But the law just says "conspicuously displayed." I printed out the law regarding under glow and put it in the glove box. But as stated above, some guys get all butt hurt when you point out that they're wrong. And playing ignorant has worked in the past. I've had cops in front of, beside, and behind us with it on, and no problems. But eventually somebody's gonna get a bur under their saddle and make a big deal out of it. Ideally, I wish they'd just use those sticky laws to pull people over to check for warrants, drunk drivers, and stuff. Tickets for these little things are just money makers for the City, and that's LAME!!

| I agree with adam. I have been hassled sooo much in just the last month for not haing a plate on the front and all 3 times getting pulled over were on 32nd or 24th. the officer told me twice that it is required NOW, which i guess means that it wasnt before and now is. I have not been ticketed, but the officer told me that he put it in my "file" that I have been told 3 times. I have a squeaky clean record, so i, like a little puppy with my tail between my legs, put my plate back on. soooooo gay. | |

| It's not really yours though, ya know. I think it falls under the same type of thing as tampering with money. Sure, you earned the money, but all you can do is spend it, not mess with it. I guess another good example is your ID, yeah, you paid for it, but if you mess with it it becomes void in the eyes of the law. | |

challenging cops and proving them wrong just pisses them off. I have had many many many too many experiences making cops look stupid. The outcome isn't very good. Speaking of Marines.... I got a OPEN CONTAINER ALCOHOL ticket downtown a few weeks ago. $135 smackers. Cop came up in a Rhino and flashed his light on me. Said STOP..etc. yada.... I asked him what did I do? He just got pissed more. They shined their lights on me. told me the law and looked pissed and with dicks up their ass. So I dumped the beer and they just harrassed me to hurry up. Then they searched me and sorta pushed my legs around and yanked on my clothes. I asked them in the end why they had to be so aggressive and rude. Said I was Security Police in the US Air Force for 3 years so I had some professional experience in this. They just got pissed and said. "YOUR A CIVILIAN NOW SO ACT LIKE IT!" "FEDERAL LAW DOESN"T APPLY HERE YOUR NOT ON A MILITARY BASE" "WE"LL TREAT YOU DIFFERENTLY CAUSE YOUR NOT IN UNIFORM" "WELL I WAS A MARINE" "YOU DON"T DEAL WITH DEADLY CRIMINALS EVERYDAY" "I WAS DEPLOYED MORE TIMES THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE>"" sorry for the capitol letters. He really was shouting lol. anyone in the end i said. "So I'm less cause I wasn't a Marine?" Then he wrote me the ticket. FYI. UCMJ applies on Military Bases. Most federal laws don't. Miranda Rights? Haha we don't read you that crap on military bases.

| Like everyone else said, you need a front plate. I was pulled over about 5 times for it (only got warnings) but decided to just put a plate on. It wasn't worth getting a ticket for, imo.
And I agree that if you are in a car that stands out you are more likely to get pulled over. That has just been my experience.

Also, when traveling from state to state, it's the driver's responsibility to make sure they conform to the laws of each state they are traveling through. Sometimes this is pretty difficult, but with front plates, it's easy.

That and in Oklahoma the plates are stamped metal so I'm not sure how they would duplicate one.
