| Hey I'm having problems on the timing for my 460 I set it with it at tdc with the rotor and stator all lined up and ready but when I go to fire the motor it backfires out of the carb with little puffs os smoke like its firing with the intake valve still open. If anyone could give me some advice on how to fix this thatd be great. | |

| Yeah, or it could be 180 off. Easy way to tell would be just to swap your plug wires across. Back when I was young and didn't know shit about cars, I replaced the plug wires on my '83 Trans Am. Of course I unhooked all the wires first, so when I put the new ones on, I got them in the right order, just the wrong direction. The thing actually ran, but ran like shit. Took me a week to figure out. | |

maybe i have been doing it wrong for along time. but every time i start fresh with the distributor out. i have always set number 1 cylinder to TDC then point the rotor towards #1. then go from there. that was on a SBC. im not sure on a ford motor. | |

| Yup, that must be it. Andrew, your #1 piston is at TDC twice during a distributor's single revolution. Try just swapping the plug wires on the dist cap 180 degrees. | |
