What do you guys do for work?

Many of the folks on here know of each other, or have an idea - but what do you guys do for work? What company do you work for and what all do your job duties include? I know about all of my friends, but hey - maybe if we let each other know, we can go to each other for business needs rather than someone who isn't part of the local car scene!

My job, however, will probably provide useless to many of the locals. Sorry!

I'll start it out:

I work for SDI. I am a Surveyor/Gyro Hand and do sub-surface surveying of oil and gas wells, geothermal wells, and even mine vents (although I have yet to do any mining related stuff) as well as performing whipstock sets and steering (setting a "wedge" and guiding them out of a vertical hole while drilling the lateral). We also work regularly with several wireline companies performing wireline surveys all utilizing our in house built earth-rate sensing tool that uses gyros (I'd get into the physics and science behind it, but you'd be as bored as I was in my training class).

Basically I get the inclination and azimuths at different points in the well with my tool, and the computer does the math to figure out the mapping of the well underneath the surface of the earth. Although, I know how to do the math myself (what a headache!!!) company policy is to use the computer as there is less margin for error, thank god for computers.

My favorite part about my job? No two jobs are identical. There are a lot of similarities in many, but its always something new/different. Also, I do have a boss, but rarely am on a jobsite with him. Typically I kind of do my own thing which is nice and being able to call my own shots is pretty sweet. I honestly have a hard time doing the 9-5 and can't work in retail ever again. I'll go breath asbestos again before doing it.

The one thing I don't like? Having to drive so damn many miles!

Well i work for VisionNet, Im currently just a Basic TAC worker, In lamens terms all i do is answer phones for Internet Companys and some phone companys. I work for 3rivers, blackfoot, nemont, Avenue, Cobridge, and around 20+ more companys. Not to great but its a very relaxed job center, everyone is cool. I would type more but thats really all i do, Trouble shoot Internet connections, phones etc. i re-setup stuff like modems over the phone, email. and phone.

How about the rest of you guys?

PS- to the OP, how did you get into that job? seems like a good job

Simple for me.... Ashley Furniture's Distribution/Service Manager. Set up all of the delivery's, services, receive and track all of the furniture that comes near the store. Also deal with most all of the customers at one point in time. Also the Manger of Billings On-time Snow Service(BOSS for short). That is about it. i enjoy staying busy, and busy i stay. Make and take at minimum 80 calls a day I would estimate. It would bore people if i went into depth.

Big Sky Accessories doing spray-in bedliners, grille guards, and other miscellaneous truck accessories.

Line worker at Qdoba (that mexican grill by shopko and costco that youve most likely heard about)
food assembly *sigh*

side note if you havnt eaten there check it out, good ass food

Full time Job- Ashley furniture service tech/ furniture repair man. Part time job- target store do anything they want me to. Also have a side second job when i have the time work for trustco management doing odd jobs around ashley furniture warehouse.

Glass Specialists- i replace windshields.. door glass.. chip repairs anything automotive glass wise at my shop we also tint windows and do clear bras

Work for Les Schwab as a certified alignment tech. I directly deal with customers to understand what issues or requests they have for their vehicle. Test drive, diagnose, and repair all makes and models. I work on just about anything from brakes, complete front end rebuilds, struts, cv axles and ujoints, lift kits, lowering kits, and of course alignments. When we are slow or the tire guys are busy I also sell, mount and balance tires. I have also installed aftermarket parts varying from mud flaps to bumpers, air bags and compressor kits, and running boards. If the customer requests it, I can pretty much do it within limits.

I work for Tanco Eng. as a welder. I currently work at Conoco refinery, but occasionally have to travel. The main part of my job is repairing the huge storage tanks around refineries. I could go in to more detail but its about as exciting as it sounds from what ive said already....haha.

I'll leave it at that until you let me know your opinions. Kind of has that "over exxageration" problem that some people around this site have...

I had my windows tinted at Glass Specialists (I think, off of Millenium, right?) And isn't Big Sky Accessories the same business? Anyways - I do need a spray in bedliner put in my truck when the weather gets better, so I'll let you guys know!

I need new furniture too! lol, however my girlfriend's Aunt and Uncle own a store in Miles City so I will probably go through them, only because they've already told me they'd sell to me at cost.

As far as getting into my field of work? Well, I started off on the bottom of the food chain as a roughneck on a workover rig (the bitch of the oilfield), when I was basically living down in Powell for 2 years. I moved there specifically for the job. After a while I became sick of working with people who couldn't count to 10 so I started applying for other jobs in the industry. I hired on with SDI originally in Sept of '08. Was then laid off in February of '09. I was unemployed for 7 months, then went to work for a couple months up in Alaska for another drilling company. We lost our contract there so I was laid off once again, then went to work for an Abatement company in town, and in February of 2010 (exactly 1 year and a day) I got a call from my boss at SDI asking me to come back to work for them. I've been with them since, and don't really plan on going anywhere. If anything I am going to try to move up the ladder here shortly - or at least into a different position so there is less driving involved, however that would mean I live at a rig for approximately 20 days at a time or so, But the money is better, and the stress level would decrease...

As far as training? It was all OJT and just paying A LOT of attention to the processes of well drilling. Its been kind of a wild ride and I am on call 24/7/365. Save for moving up the ladder, I wouldn't change it for the world. My boss is the coolest guy I've ever worked for so that makes the job pretty laid back. The jumping through my ass to get to ND "3 hrs ago" as we like to say is always fun, lol.

Yes we know Graham. he was a delivery guy. pretty decent guy. had his ups and downs like everybody. I personally got along with him. only thing is some times he complained a bit much but thats about it. he said he was a good bud of yours.

I work for a company called CGI. We are located in the same office building in the CHS(Cenex) refinery in Laurel. I do design work for the refinery there. My background is in structural steel so I do a lot of that work for them as well as pipe and routing design. I have to go out to the refinery quite a bit to take field measurements and check layouts. We are slowly but surely getting the entire refinery into an AutoCAD model so when we need to retrofit existing areas or create new units we can use our interactive model to do so.

I fix Subaru's probably the simplest car to work on! I do it all , heavy line tech, I must say i do like the cars, probably the best DD car. Could use more mpg but the new ones are getting 30+ with awd.
It sucks because i like working with Subaru but hate Rimrock.

PS: if you brake your 5 speed don't be looking for warranty to come save the day!!

I run Ashley's Outlet Store, The Mattress and Furniture Outlet. I account for about 30% of Chris' 80 phone calls a day. Most of them are his fault... But I do everything since I am usually here by myself. It's a pretty nice job.

Definitely a good guy, and yes, I can see the bad attitude when it comes to work. He's been talking about moving back out here (heard thru the grape vine) - I would have hung out with him had I not disapproved of his girlfriend at the time. He did honk the goddamn horn on your delivery truck EVERY time he passed my house.

So you guys gonna cut me a deal on some furniture if I buy from you or what?! lol. Probably gonna be looking to replace the sofas in my living room in the next few weeks, as well as possibly buying a new bedroom set (depending on how much extra cash I've got between selling this car and tax returns, after buying stuff for my other car).

I meet people, then I go meet more people... then I figure out how to make money from all of the people/ideas that I just found out about. Then I repeat the process. Rigth now most of my focus is on the oil fields in North Dakota.

Well there ate some people with cool jobs and some people I'm glad I don't have....lol

I work for tetra tech here in billings. My job name is called a industrial field technician....what that is I have no idea......lol I mainly deal with hazardous waste such as lead, asbestos, mold... I just got my certification on inspecting houses commercial buildings and refinerys.....but its fun

Internet Marketing Manager right now, though RRAG is about 5 years behind the rest of the online world, though I assume most dealerships are like that.

I pretty much just kiteboard as much as possible.

For real though, I have worked at UPS for just over 7 years and I own Deck Tech of Billings, where we build and refinish decks.

I am a Commercial Services Engineer.. I do network design, install, configure and troubleshoot equipment for DS3's, T1s, Fiber.. and other network equipment, like routers and switches.

No kidding? I worked in the Bresnan call center for 3 years. Was quite the cesspool then, and I've heard it's gone downhill. I imagine the engineering dept is probably not as bad since your management chain is of a different variety.

I'd say it's completely different.. I have my own private office and half of my time is spent making network designs on the computer and 1/8 of my time in meetings.. the rest is on electronics.. as far as day to day stuff goes.. The only frustrating part is the regular changes as soon as you get something figured out and working they change how everything has to be done so it feels like everything you try do is wrong but typically i do enjoy my job and working there.

Thank you Stephen, I appreciate it. I cannot take all the credit, my brother is about 10% involved and Montoya is about 30% with me making the other 60%. Montoya and I work almost the same hours for the most part, but I have to deal with all the phone calls and doing the books. Montoya is a very large part of Deck Techs success.
