Turbo Rebuild

I will be rebuilding my turbo in the next week or so and just wanted to throw out some information I've gathered before I start my Write Up on it.

I purchased this repair kit:

Honest opinion on rebuilt turbo's is it's a waste of money. The balance will never be correct and things will wear out quicker than they should. Even sending a turbo off to a reputable rebuilder is a ticking time bomb!

But then again others get lucky and they last a fair amount of time! I've just seen too many go bad!

I had my 20g turbo rebuild by Deadbolt almost 3 1/2 years ago and it has run strong ever since. It is probably mostly luck of the draw on the rebuilds though. As long as it comes with some sort of warranty as mine did than that would be a good option I would think.

Are you serious? send your turbo to someone who knows what they are doing and it will be better than new......

Exile Turbo (Rick head) , SuperNatural turbo (Reed), Forced Inductions(Jose).

But if its a master power or ebay special junk it- it was garbage to start with.

Ebay turbos aren't all junk. Masterpower is getting alot better too. Evergreen turbo is one of the most recommended turbo rebuilders I know for a reasonable price. There are plenty of people that rebuild there turbos, without balancing them, and have good results, but you sure don't want to have the turbo explode do to not getting something right.

My honest opinion on this opinion is that it is FALSE. Its just like the rumor started years ago that a rebuilt engine will not last as long as a factory engine.

this will be very hard to explain but here we go. you start with a piece of metal that you machine to a certain spec. you assemble it to what ever is required or is acceptable and sell it new. u get a used unit back build it to the exact same spec or acceptable requirement and its not as good as a new one!?

nice thing about a used unit is.... it is done warping form all the heat cycles like it had not been when it was new. so it will hold to it required specs/ clearances 9 out of 10 times better than a new unit! the main thing about rebuilding a turbo is cleanliness. that is what kills rebuilt turbos, they are not always kept clean. usually it is the fault of the owner of the vehicle that it is going back on. moral of the story as long as it was rebuilt correct id take a used unit over a new one any day. / rant

I used to build jet engines for a living, same as a turbo only bigger, it is TOTALLY luck of the draw. All the little tiny imperfections in bearings, fans/impellers, turbines, can add up. Even the nut on the end gets balanced within a specific spec. Iv had rotating assemblies go together out of spec and after several different combonations of components, the EXACT SAME assembly will be within spec! Some engines would get installed and never be seen again, some would come back in three months. There is NO WAY to be sure the new one you bought or the rebuilt one you paid 600 to have overhauled will last until you install them and start putting miles on them. Sorry for the rant but I figured as long as we were gonna break out the necro thread I could get a little crazy. BTW it was homeboys opinion, he was just trying to give a little advice. AAAAAAAAAAAND I think todd has solved this problem already, but im sure he appreciates all the hella tardy advice. hahaha

lmfao! I had my brother look at this post (he was delavan jets main inspector for years)... he said if that were to ever happen delavan someone would have been fired long before they started building.

I come from a family of machinist's i understand all aspects of measurement and what not... if it is assemble correctly it will last a very long time; as long as it is used porporly and taken care of. the build part isnt the issue... its how its used.
