PostSubject: Safe to run?   Safe to run? Icon_minitimeJuly 6th 2011, 3:31 pm

Would I be safe to run my car at idle for say 10 minutes without the turbo bolted on (just open out the log manifold) to see if smoke is coming from the motor or if it is still something wrong inside the turbo?

The Venge is still smoking on and off and I'm trying to pinpoint why before the next Lewistown approaches Sad

I know for a FACT that the missing seal I replaced inside the turbo helped reduce my smoking by 80% but not all the way. There is no more oil seeping out of all the flanges like before and the smoke only starts once I have reached operating temp. I've pulled the plugs and non of them seem to have any oil on them along with did a compression test which ruled out piston rings.

I have been reading a lot of valve stem seals leaking...... but this doesn't quite match up with what my problem is (at least I don't think)

I'm trying to get this figured out in the next couple weeks so ANYONE please help if you can! Thanks!

I'm obviously not an expert, but I don't see why it would hurt? As long as you still have a filter on your intake so it is getting clean air in?
The exhaust was just going to go through a muffler anyways, so it is still taking the same path as before (if you were NA), just a shorter one?
Just my opinion, could be wrong

Well what I'm saying is running it with the turbo off, it would not be routed threw the exhaust system. It would be like runnin an open header almost. I've heard it's not good to run motors this way due to the lack of backpreasure from the exhaust not being hooked up normally......

could it jest be excess oil burning off the exhaust...

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I just don't see how it could hurt.
And I have done a lot of reading on backpressure when i was reading about turbos and stuff, and from all the articles I've come across it seems like it doesn't matter.
IDK, AFAIK I think you'll be fine.

I doubt it. I can go driving for an hour sometimes and not have the slightest bit of smoke, but then the next time I drive it around, it'll smoke. I've gone about 150 miles since rebuilding the turbo so you'd think it would all be burned out by now.

You think it would be safe to run it without the turbo just to make sure it's not my motor that's smoking Rob?

Thanks Montoya, I've had a few others agree that I should be fine to run it that way, just not to drive around as I could melt my fans LOL.

I'm hoping that switching my catch can setup to the way I had it before and replacing my PCV will solve the problem but if not than this is the route I will be heading down.

Ya, and at least I live in an old person neighborhood so the obnoxiousness of running it open will fall on deaf ears Laughing

    What color is the smoke?

This may help you narrow it down a bit if you are unsure whether or not it is oil:

safe, yes. but i would jest idle it.

but if its a intermittent problem it could take lots of idling .

have you noticed any loss of oil, after the new seal install?
