I never understood what the obsession was about drifting. It's just an exhibition sport. It is NOT the fastest way around a race track. It's just for show.... and anyone that wants to debate that drifting is faster then properly driving and the proper line.... I'll only debate it by shutting up and racin to proove it

I only like it because the amount of control you have over the vehicle takes pure talent and timing. I just can't imagine having that much control. Drifting is definately not about racing, it's about control and coordination.

I hope we don't have to have the argument on here about why drifting is cool! I agree completely with the two statements above, so hopefully that just stops the debate here. Why I like it.... simple, it's fun and takes new sets of skills so I enjoy learning them. No it's not fast, no it's not racing.... but it is a motorsport, and I will continue to enjoy it.

I'm going to have to agree more with Dr. Auto, I personally prefer to get as much grip out of my car as possible. I do think it would be fun to be good at drifting and I'll continue from time to time to play around but overall I think too many S-chassis's are built and wrecked by drifting when they make great grip cars. This is like everything I have no problem with people wanting to drift, its just not my preference. Although since I am still sporting Azenis 245/40/18's I probably should be drifting since I'm far from being setup for the type of grip I hope to achieve some day.

i, really enjoy sliding around corners under a controlled skid. it is fun, and i do on occasion get my tank sideways, but as of right now, wrong tires for sure for me...

WOW.... all you guys are kewl. I agree.... It's not fast. it's just fun....till you buy tires. lol
I have to admit however i have this pet peeve.... and it's when the drifting crowd THINK it's the fastest way to drive. It's not.... and for those people... I say don't argue. Just show up at a race and I'll proove you wrong. THE END
On the flip side..... it does take talent and coordination to drift... I cannot drift awesome. But then I've spent all my time learning how to drive fast and using the correct line.... so maybe I'll try and suck. lol

I'm good at sucking at driving, too bad I can't drift good, drag race good and probably can't road race good. But it sure is fun to try. And great to make friends who enjoy just getting out there regardless of their skills. I think maybe that's part of my "Snowboarder" mentality. Life is what you make of it, it can be fun as long as you enjoy what you do and don't let yourself get caught up in the hype.

Matt... I'm not sure anyone mentioned drifting being the fastest way around the track... and I'm going to guess that the "drift crowd" you speak of is not actually into the motorsports aspect, they're probably into the hype (it's sad isn't it?) But... that was me years ago when I found an old stock corolla coupe and thought I was going to be kingshit because I was a master at e-brake drifting my old integra! Lucky for me the corolla also make a nice autocross car.
I think it's hard to become any sort of drifter in this town because there does not seem to be any organization or team that gets out there regularly and tries to perfect their hobby. It's relatively easy to go to SCCA events and race all day with other folks that are doing the same thing. It's a bit harder to find nice corners that are not patrolled regularly and a group of dudes to enjoy it with.
And... there was mention of not wanting to drift because their car was not prepared, had too much body roll and the like. When my corolla was stock with 20yr old bushings and blown struts I found it easy to throw out the back end... and, it taught me the limits of my car. I think any sort of racing in a stock vehicle is a great learning experience!
Alright... I'll get off the box.

I would love to be able to drift the Suby. Not really sure how easy it would be to drift with AWD, but converting to RWD would be pretty sweet (obviously I would be doing this on a different car). It is pretty easy to corner slide, but a full drift would be very difficult.
