When TUNING goes wrong...

I am not 100% sure it was the tune, but I have no other idea what it could have been. Being that the pistons are the weak point in the STI, I suppose that could have also been the problem. Enjoy this picture.

The Rod is a burrowing creature... If you look closely you can see each individual tooth mark from where he has gnawed at the walls of his surroundings to make his new dwelling... FECK!

I was out cruising around the other day and thought I lost a rod bearing. I guess it was a little more severe.

im gonna guess that its pauls sti. i knew his car was out of service and heard mike was gonna be doing the rebuild. and i live right by paul and the sti isnt sitting at his house right now. just my guess!

Actually that is Mike's engine. He was getting spring fever so bad he couldn't even wait for spring to show up. So I was able to talk him into doing a winter rally-x with his car. He was doing really good but we didn't account for how much lower his car sits than all the other rally cars and it eventually scooped enough snow up it packed the radiator solid. Dumb thing overheated before mike knew it. He still came in third, but at the cost of another engine. It really was making just a little knocking noise it sure didn't sound that bad.

Congrats out to Mike for third place though at his first winter rally-x.

I know it's Paul's as that was the engine he was working on all weekend. LOL. Mikes plates are expired and it's been sitting in storage.

Yeah, that is the #3 on Paul's car.

Sorry, I got the story a little wrong. Mike was driving Paul's car at the rally-x and got third place in Paul's car but blew up the #3 cyl in it while racing because the radiator got packed with snow and over heated. Sorry about the confusion.

at any rate, blown up shit sucks. i have a whole pile of sweet high performance exploding parts

yeah it is kinda weird how you can pay out the nose for some pistons and rings, and one day there is a missing piston but the rings are still there? i don't get it. ive found pistons and shit in mufflers after bad explosions.

Mike, want to shed some light on what/who tuned the car? Was this something you guys had tweaked with or some 3rd party flash tune?

I think he had it tuned by someone down in Denver.. It had a big turbo, and stock internals. That's the extent of what I know.

well he was probably just a hair lean then concidering elevation change and all the incedentals , that sucks either way. hope he gets it back together

Paul had his car tuned by a guy named Harvey down in Denver. That is really all I know about the situation. It really does not suprise me that the engine failed as it is all stock internals and running 25psi. There was only 1300 miles on the turbo conversion before the explosion.

I guess the moral of the story is if you are going to be pushing crazy amount of CFM + BOOST the internals are in need of an upgrade. Stock internals on an STI are not forged and will not hold up forever.

I was talking with Paul today and it looks like he is getting things rounded up and we might have a build on our hands here in the next month or so.

so me being the hard head that i am, i became a mechanic for a living, now i'm hurt and i cant do that anymore so ima go to school on worker's comp money to be a industrial design or engineer or something.
designing shit for other people to work on.

Paul is really getting things figured out. He has a bare block, all gaskets, and built heads. He is in the process of getting the pistons/rods here in the next couple days. Might be getting her back together more sooner than later.

how do you think that turbo liked that? that engine was bad! it had piston fragments on the other head ...

was it tuning or timing..... haha that looks terrible!!
